Yoga Nidra and Better Sleep: What It Is and How to Start

Yoga nidra, sometimes called “yogic sleep”, is a guided practice in which you lie down and are led through the body and breath into deep relaxation, while staying softly aware.

What happens in a session

A teacher guides you to settle, set a short intention, move attention through the body part by part and follow the breath. There is nothing to achieve and nothing to do right.

Why people love it for sleep

Many of us live in a constant state of alertness. Nidra gives the nervous system permission to unwind. Even a short session can leave you feeling as rested as a nap, and practising regularly can make bedtime easier.

Try this tonight

  • Dim the lights and lie on your back with a blanket.
  • Let your eyes close and feel the weight of the body supported.
  • Slowly move your attention from your toes to the top of your head, softening each part.
  • Follow five slow breaths, then let the breath be natural.

If you fall asleep, that is fine. Over time you will find a place between wakefulness and sleep that feels deeply restful.

Our Yoga Nidra for Deep Sleep course offers three guided evenings to help you build your own bedtime routine.
